Nexus Appoints New Director of General Insurance
Rumi M Sanjana, Former CEO of Vita International Insurance Brokers, Aims to Grow Nexus’ General Insurance Business

Nexus has appointed a new Director of General Insurance, Rumi M Sanjana, as part of its 2010 plan for double-digit growth in the general insurance side of its business, the brokerage announced today.
Sanjana, former CEO of Vita International Insurance Brokers, is a veteran of the GCC insurance sector, with 32 years of experience in the UAE’s insurance industry, which included a stint on the committee of the Emirates Insurance Association.
“My reason for joining Nexus is to support the firm in their growth and expansion of the general insurance side of the business. At present it makes up about 15 percent of the company’s overall business, and we are looking to increase that by a double-digit figure this year,” Sanjana said.
The UAE, as well as other Gulf countries, still has low overall insurance penetration, sitting at around 1.1% on average compared with 7% globally, according to the most recent Arab Insurance Market Review.
“Lack of awareness of general insurance products is still a major barrier in the region, even simple policies, such as cover for household contents, are very low on people’s agendas. This is something myself and my team will be working towards changing in 2010,” Sanjana added.

Sanjana has previously enjoyed senior appointments with leading insurance companies, including Al Futtain, Willis Faber, and Tokio Marine. In his most recent seven-year tenure as CEO of Vita International Insurance Brokers, he was given the dual responsibility of looking after VIG’s operations in India as their Director, as well as being the company’s CEO.
