Winners of Nexus Qatar’s First Children’s Art Competition Honoured in Prize-giving Ceremony
More than 2,000 Children from 20 Schools Entered the Drawing Competition Aimed at Raising Awareness of Environmental Issues
Doha, Qatar, May 30, 2010
Six budding young artists have been awarded the top prizes for their excellent environmentally conscious drawings as part of Nexus’ inaugural children’s art competition, which drew more than two thousand entrants from 20 primary schools across Qatar.
The winners, runners-up, their parents, friends and school representatives attended the prize-giving ceremony at the Diplomatic Club, The Pearl, Doha, on 29 May, where Nexus handed out laptops, play-stations and MP4 players to the winning entrants who wowed the judges with their creative artwork based on the themes of ‘Save Our Planet’ and ‘Recycle’.
Daksha Shetty from Birla Public School won first prize in the 9 to 12 year old category for her ‘Save Our Planet’ inspired drawing, while second prize went to Nivedhitha Satish Kumar from Doha Modern Indian School, and the third prize went to Srinidhi Ramanathan from DPS-MIS.
Winner of the five to eight year old category was named as Nathalie Abdul Rahman from the Lebanese School for her ‘Recyle’ inspired drawing. Second prize went to Sara Siddiq Omer, Al Khor International School, and third prize to Dareen Mohammad El Zard from the American Academy.
The competition was run by Nexus, the region’s largest independent financial services network, to help raise awareness of green issues among young people following a recent Qatari government initiative to educate the population on the importance of sustainable living.
Due to the competition’s success Nexus has announced that it will be running the competition every year. Sharon Gardner, Director and General Manager of Nexus’ Qatar Financial Centre Branch said: “Nexus would like to congratulate the winners of our first-ever art competition in Qatar, and to thank all the children and schools who took part. We were overwhelmed by the massive response that saw more than two thousand children from across the country sending us their wonderfully creative artwork, giving the judges an incredibly tough job.”
“Nexus decided to focus on green issues for the art competition in response to the Qatar government’s emphasis on education in this field, and we hope that by targeting young children we will help develop a natural concern for the environment among the future generation in Qatar,” she added.
